Coracao Confections Cacoco Drinking Chocolate 65% Mocha Dark $14.95 $11.96

The ancient Olmecs of what is now Mexico were most likely the first to domesticate cacao trees.

The crop spread to the Mayans and Aztecs, which revered the beverage enough to use it in ritual ceremonies. Traditional drinking chocolate requires two main ingredients: chocolate shavings and a little warm milk (or dairy substitute) which leads to a dense and rich beverage. It’s nothing like the packets of powdered chocolate, milk and sugar that we are used to in the U.S. today.

Not sure how you’d use it?

We test everything we sell. Here’s how we’d use this.

Whisk 3 tablespoons chocolate into 1/4 cup boiling water or milk. It’s important to whisk or blend to get a smooth drinking chocolate, instead of stirring. You can also use less milk or water to get a thick rich, low-sugar sauce perfect for topping desserts.
