This set of bowls was crafted by artisan potters in Gifu, a mountainous prefecture considered the top ceramic-producing region in Japan. They are Oribe ware pieces, which is an almost 500-year-old ceramic style known for its asymmetrical shape, decorative painting and signature green glaze (made by firing copper dioxide). The eye-catching pieces act as the perfect bowls for rice, soup or sides. And each bowl—which features a rich green glaze and leaf or flower motifs around the exterior—is one of a kind due to its handmade nature.

We like to use it for sides like rice, soup or salad. When transferring from kitchen to table, you’ll feel the bowls’ subtle grooves that connect them back to small potters honing their craft in lush mountain villages. Sold in a set of two.

What is Oribe Ware?

It’s a natural pottery style that traces back to the 16th and 17th centuries during the Momoyama Period in Japan. Oribe ware reflects wabi-sabi techniques (embracing imperfections and transience) in its handmade designs. The style was named after Furuta Oribe, a renowned tea master who influenced unique traits like rich glaze colors, playful and asymmetrical shapes, decorating motifs of nature or geometric patterns and the use of contrast.
