Made by artisans in Toki in Japan’s Gifu Prefecture, this sake set combines traditional craftsmanship with modern lines. It’s a beautiful example of Mino ware, a style of pottery or ceramic made in the Mino province that has endured in the region for over 1,300 years. The set includes one carafe (called a tokkuri) and two sake cups (ochoko). We especially love how thoughtful this set’s design is: The cups are made so the scent of the sake wafts upward, and the carafe features a small, separate upper bowl for ice to keep the sake cool without diluting it. The ice bowl is also attached by fasteners that keep it sitting upright—so you won’t have ice tumbling out as you pour the sake.
And by the 10th century, clear, premium sake was the choice drink of the upper class, while those with lesser means drank the unrefined, cloudier-looking sake. Since sake was typically a beverage enjoyed during holidays and other celebrations, people were likely using a coordinating set like this one (though without the modern ice mechanism).

Simply pour the sake in the body of the carafe, then fill the attached larger cup with crushed ice and attach it to the carafe’s upper part. Chill for 10 minutes before serving.
