Pure Indian Foods Organic Whole DIY Garam Masala $9.95

The deep, layered flavors that define so much of Indian cooking often can be credited to the use of masalas, or spice blends.

Typically used in combination with single spices and aromatics, masalas—of which there are countless variations across India—are a one-stroke solution for adding complexity to a dish. Among the best-known masalas is garam masala, which roughly translates as "warming spices." Whereas the seasoning blends you find in grocery stores have likely been sitting there for months, Pure Indian Foods uses whole spices in its DIY Garam Masala, so all the flavor is preserved until you grind the mix into powder. Moreover, the company's unique blend has a more complex flavor and aroma than other varieties.

Not sure how you’d use it?

We test everything we sell. Here’s how we’d use this.

HOW TO USE

Coarsely grind the spices or crush them with a mortar and pestle, then lightly toast in a dry skillet until aromatic. Sprinkle Garam Masala on simple baked chicken breast or salmon fillet for a quick and flavorful entree, or use it on roasted vegetables, especially squash or sweet potatoes. We especially love this garam masala with popcorn, either sprinkled directly over it or bloomed in hot oil or butter. We also love spooning the bloomed spices over earthy lentils, potatoes or greens. On the sweet side, try 1 1/2 teaspoons garam masala instead of the cinnamon, cardamom and ginger in cookies or cakes for extra spice—its intense aroma will add a next-level warmth and complexity to any spiced dessert.
