Mala Market Sesame Paste

5.0 star rating 1 Review

Mala Market's Chinese Sesame Paste is one of the few products of its kind to be verified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It's made from single-origin white sesame seeds from Xingjiang that are toasted to a deep golden brown, resulting in a much more robust flavor than tahini, which is made from raw or lightly toasted sesame seeds. The seeds are stone-ground in the traditional way, with their hulls intact, for a smooth and full-bodied texture. Similar to natural peanut butter, the sesame paste will have some separation but is smooth—and fresh—enough that a quick stir is enough to reincorporate the oils and solids.

In Chinese cuisine, white sesame paste is generally used for savory recipes, especially as a base ingredient for sauces in dan dan noodles or cold sesame noodles. Try it for our rich and flavorful Peanut-Sesame Udon Noodles with Scallions, a quick and adaptable weeknight recipe.

The Mala Market—named after the term for the spicy-numbing combination of chilies and Sichuan peppercorns that defines Sichuan cooking—imports top-grade dried chilies and spices of remarkable quality, with close control over their supply chain. Started in 2016, this family company was started by Nashville resident Taylor Holliday, who first started sourcing Sichuan ingredients so she could cook for her adopted daughter, Fong Chong Havighurst, who came to the United States from China at the age of 11. To this day, the mother-daughter pair regularly travels to China to find unique and authentic Sichuan specialties for the American consumer.
