Although Belazu Ingredient Company calls this paste a tapenade, it doesn't have the concentrated salty flavor associated with most tapenades; it's also not made with olives and capers, the defining ingredients of classic French tapenades. Rather, Belazu's vibrant spread has a rich roasted pepper flavor (think mild bell peppers, not spicy chili peppers), with an extra sweet-umami basenote and buttery finish. Tomato paste, paprika and garlic complement the peppers and add savory dimension. The spread has visible bits of pepper pulp, but on the palate it has a silky, almost creamy consistency.

Not only is Belazu Roasted Pepper Tapenade great as a sandwich spread or dip crudités and crostini—whether mixed with hummus, Greek yogurt or on its own—the sweet-vegetal flavor is simple and robust enough that it can be used as an ingredient in recipes. Try tossing it with cooked beans or warm grains for a salad. Add a spoonful to tomato-based sauces for a fruity boost, or use it as the base for a no-cook pasta sauce with feta cheese, pine nuts or walnuts and a generous squeeze of lemon juice. It can even be used as a mild alternative to spicy harissa.
