Burlap & Barrel Grenada Gold Nutmeg $11.95

Grenada nutmeg is nearly impossible to find.

So it was a surprise when a small Grenadan farm run for generations by the Ramdhanny family reached out to Burlap & Barrel via social media to orchestrate the likely first-ever direct export of nutmeg from the region. The farm is tucked away in the hills and is one of few to still have some old-growth trees that survived Hurricane Ivan in 2004, which wiped out much of the area’s resources. Now, it’s run by Bobbie—the most recent of the four generations to cultivate the land.

HOW TO USE

Use as you would typical nutmeg: It’s lovely in baked goods like fruit pie, coffee cake, spice cookies and treats like our Glazed Guinness Gingerbread. It offers warming balance to squash and potatoes as well as any creamy blended vegetable soup. On the savory side, it forms a complex spice crust to meat like in our Oven-Perfect Strip Steak with Chimichurri and also enhances egg dishes like our Deep-Dish Quiche with Mushrooms, Bacon and Gruyère. A sprinkle in a cheese fondue brings out its nuttiness. And you can never go wrong with a bit grated atop a cocktail (especially one with rum).

Kitchen Notes

Nutmeg, more than many spices, needs to stay in its whole form until directly before using. That’s why store-bought pre-ground nutmeg has so little flavor. This is whole nutmeg ready to grate with a rasp grater or nutmeg grater.
