Celebrating centuries of craftsmanship.
J. Catma supports artisans in India as they produce goods in small batches, so they can continue the tradition of their crafts—like block-printing. Rising to prominence during the Mughal empire and still popular in Rajasthan, block printing is a painstaking process. Each wooden block is carved by hand before being soaked in oil to soften the grain so it better holds onto the dye. Once the fabric is prepared for printing, the blocks are dipped into dye and gently pressed into the fabric to create a repeating pattern.
