Lyle’s Golden Syrup has remained unchanged since it was first made in East London in 1881. This sugar cane syrup is light and sweet, with just enough flavor to keep it interesting. The slightly caramelized notes make this perfect for drizzling over pancakes or adding to pecan pie, but its rich buttery taste also works well for a savory soup or stew. The decorative tin that houses this syrup was originally produced by Abram Lyle & Sons in 1883. The packaging has remained unchanged since it’s debut, aside from a brief departure during World War I, where all available metal had to go to support England’s war effort. Despite the hiatus, in 2007 the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed the classic Lyle’s Golden Syrup tin as the world’s oldest unchanged brand packaging.

Use as a sweetener, like a simple syrup or agave, in smoothies, drinks and cocktails. Try in baked goods, such as pecan pie, in place of corn syrup (unless the corn syrup is to prevent crystallization). Drizzle over pancakes, waffles and french toast or over a scoop of ice cream, or add a teaspoon to savory stews and soups.

Abram Lyle built a sugar refinery on the Thames in East London in 1881, where he first produced Lyle’s Golden Syrup, calling it “Goldie,” and selling it from wooden casks. In 1883 the company started packaging the syrup in popular green and gold tins, and both the classic syrup and the distinctive packaging have remained unchanged to this day. In 1950, the company went on to add Lyle’s Black Treacle, a distinct bittersweet syrup, for those looking for a more intense alternative to Lyle’s Golden Syrup.
