The Opinel family in the French Alps has produced top-quality knives for generations, and this model might be the new favorite knife you never knew you needed. The 4.5-inch broad-bladed, flexible breakfast knife is the perfect tool for so many little kitchen tasks: spreading butter and jam on toast, slicing avocados, crafting sandwiches. The partially serrated section of the blade will make quick work of the crustiest croissant or chewiest sausage, while its rounded, slightly bulbous tip is ideal for getting out the last bits of jam and spreading it on toast. Beyond breakfast, it’s terrific for cheese boards and picnics; its thin flexible shape even makes it a great tool for icing cakes. The handle is not bulky and comfortable to hold; we particularly like the orange-handled version of the knife, which is easy to spot in the most cluttered utensil drawer. To keep it in good condition, we recommend hand-washing and drying promptly. Buy a few and use tableside instead of steak knives.
