There are so many rolling pins out there. I love the concept of the adjustable rolling pin; however, they are often too short, made of metal or silicone, and they have adjustable rubber bands on the ends. These bands get easily lost or stretched out so they are no longer usable. The metal and silicone pins can also conduct heat and ruin the dough. I wanted to design a wooden pin that offered a smooth roll, with a long enough center for easy rolling, with measurements and adjustable heights for the perfect pie and cookie dough.
I have been rolling out pie dough for decades now and have avoided the gimmicky models - the ones made of marble, the ones with adjustable ends, etc. But getting dough to an even thickness is tricky and especially important when working with cookie dough and pastries where perfect matters. I love this pin since it is sturdy, well-made, and the end caps screw on easily to provide a really stable, no-sense pin that measures almost two-feet across, plenty big for any job. In short, this is no gimmick - it is the first “smart” pin I have come across that really gets the job done and will last and last.
I have never had good success with rolling pins, they just never turned out a nice even dough and it became frustrating for me. Enter this beautiful clever gem! I have used it several times and it always gives me a uniform smooth dough that makes me smile. I will keep this one in mind for my baking friends as a nice gift.
Finally a great set to replace my Galloping Gourmet set from the 70's. I kid you not. This would make a great gift for a new baker.
I have only had a couple of chances to take full advantage of the adjustable end pieces but they do make a huge difference when looking for specific dough thickness! I also love the measurements in both inches and centimeters on the roller itself!
A perfectly flat 1/8-inch thick crust is ideal for pie crusts and tarts. Unevenly rolled crusts can slump, cook unevenly or leak.
The 1/4-inch end caps are perfect for evenly rolling out cookie doughs, like Christmas cookies and gingerbread.
When you need a compact pin for smaller items leave off the end caps and use just the center section.
Use the rolling pin’s ruler to ensure that your shaped dough is the right size to fit the pan.
