Dave's Cold Brewed Coffee Syrup
Dave’s Coffee Syrup is for so much more than coffee milk, Rhode Island’s sweet, creamy official state beverage. Dave’s syrup starts with Brazilian coffee beans—roasted specifically for use in the syrup—before the nutty, smoky ground beans are cold-brewed for 18 hours. This coffee is boiled with pure cane sugar and agave nectar for a complex, dimensional sweetness, until coffee syrup is born. Our testers noticed that this syrup tastes the way coffee smells—sweet and toasty—with none of the bitter or tannic notes of a brewed cup. While coffee milk is a classic and refreshing way to enjoy the taste of this syrup, we also love it in cocktails, batters, as a binder for granola, as a glaze for meat or roasted vegetables, brushed on to pastries and dessert and so much more. The full-bodied, chocolatey notes of coffee shine through in every application.
Belazu Sour Cherry Molasses
Mouthwateringly tart, balanced by sweet, silky wine-like notes, Belazu’s Sour Cherry Molasses is not to be conflated with pomegranate molasses. Made with a blend of dark red Kutahya and Katirli sour cherries sourced from Türkiye, this complex and rich rendition tastes distinctly like cherries. Winner of a Great Taste Award in 2023, it’s full of body—thick and deep red with a pourable viscosity thicker than your average balsamic. While we love it drizzled over sweet applications like cheesecake, pudding and ice cream, it also is a dynamic addition to pork, duck, vegetables like eggplant, yogurt, oatmeal, cocktails, marinades and so much more.
Xilli Veracruzan Hot Honey
This truly unique hot honey is nothing like the one-dimensional versions of the condiment you may find elsewhere. Single-origin Veracruzan honey gets dimension and complexity from three different types of Mexican chilies, as well as an unexpected twist from an infusion of coffee beans. The coffee and chilies add a deep, tobacco smokiness and fruity, earthy kick of heat, which temper the honey’s floral sweetness. Try it on a charcuterie or cheese plate, grilled pork, pizza, fried chicken and barbecue or in desserts and beverages (we’d love it in horchata or a cocktail)—it packs a bold punch.
Mount Mansfield Maple Products Maple Syrup
This incredibly rich syrup has notes of butterscotch, honey and toasted sugar, with a heady base of vanilla and dried fruit. A member of our kitchen team likened its richness to a melted Werther's candy. It’s medium-bodied, which means it can easily be drizzled, but never too watery like store-bought versions. Compared to others, this one has a strong “true maple” flavor to it—nothing like more run-of-the-mill syrups that often have an off pine taste.
Just Panela Granulated Panela Sugar
Here at Milk Street we have rediscovered more flavorful pantry items including flours, vinegars, oils, and salts. At the top of our list, however, is sugar. This raw, unrefined sugar from Colombia packs a complex, earthy flavor that’s terrific in everything from tea, coffee and cocktails to oatmeal or grapefruit. The bittersweet flavor also does well in savory applications, like a pot of Mexican beans or tomato-based pasta sauces. It will become your sugar bowl standard.
Blossoms Syrup Sour Cherry
The first ingredient in this Sour Cherry Syrup by Blossoms Syrup is real cherry juice concentrate, so the syrup actually tastes like cherry, not a laboratory formulation of what cherry should taste like. Winner of a Great Taste winner in 2015, our kitchen called it “lip-smacking good”–rich and dark in taste and color with just enough acidity, reminiscent of cherry pie. It hits all the marks and doesn’t contain any colorings or flavorings. Use it in cocktails like a Manhattan, in drinks like a cherry lime rickey or drizzle over ice cream. We love it swirled into yogurt and granola.
Blossoms Syrup Rhubarb Syrup
The first ingredient in this Rhubarb Syrup by Blossoms Syrups is real rhubarb juice concentrate, so the syrup actually tastes like rhubarb, not a laboratory formulation of what rhubarb should taste like. With a balanced ratio of tart to sweet, this syrup’s flavor is evocative of strawberry rhubarb pie. Light in taste and color with just enough acidity, it hits all the marks and doesn’t contain any colorings or flavorings. Use it in smoothies, fruit desserts, drizzled over crêpes or added to a gin and tonic.
Blossoms Syrup Passion Fruit
The first ingredient in this Passionfruit Syrup by Blossoms Syrup is real passion fruit juice concentrate, so the syrup actually tastes like passion fruit, not a laboratory formulation of what passion fruit should taste like. One of our favorites from the company, we see why this was the winner of a Great Taste award in 2012 and 2019. It’s sweet—but not cloyingly so—and levels out with a balanced tartness. It hits all the marks, and doesn’t contain any colorings or flavorings. Use it in cocktails or drizzle on desserts. The founders at Blossoms even like swirling it in yogurt.
Blossoms Syrup Pomegranate
The first ingredient in this Pomegranate Syrup by Blossoms Syrup is real pomegranate fruit juice concentrate, so the syrup actually tastes like pomegranate, not a laboratory formulation of what pomegranate should taste like. For the traditionalist who prefers pomegranate in their grenadine, this pure pomegranate syrup is a great option, as the fruit flavor doesn’t get lost or muddled. Winner of a Great Taste winner in 2018, it’s tart and tangy with just enough sweetness to keep it from tasting sour. It hits all the marks, and doesn’t contain any colorings or flavorings. Use it in cocktails or drizzle on desserts. We love it swirled into yogurt and granola.
Mount Mansfield Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup
This malty maple syrup is made from Grade A Amber Rich syrup before being aged for two and a half to three months in charred oak bourbon barrels from a small craft distillery in Chicago. Though lighter in color compared to the Grade B, the sweetness of the pure Vermont syrup is balanced beautifully by dark bourbon flavor, which comes through clearly, along with strong whiskey notes that spread across your tongue. The flavor lingers too, leaving behind a touch of leather from the oak barrel and a faint tingle from the whiskey burn.
