Olivieiri 1882 Mini Classic Panettone

Regular price $25.00

This adorably pocket-sized panettone from Olivieri 1882 is the smaller sibling of their rich, golden-hued Classic Panettone. Its secret? All-natural leavening and over 140 years of practice. (As the name suggests, the Italian company was founded in 1882 and remains in the Olivieri family to this day.) Rich with butter and egg yolks, the dough undergoes a four-day fermentation process fueled only by natural sourdough yeasts. This yields a plush, airy crumb with just enough of that distinctive sourdough tang. A generous helping of raisins and candied orange peel adds extra festive sweetness and textural interest, while a dash of bourbon vanilla ties everything together. You can even see little flecks of the vanilla pods in the crumb.

It’s the very picture of a classic Italian panettone, in a fun miniature size. It’s packed in a gift-ready box printed with a striking black, white and red design. (The mini size makes an amazing stocking stuffer, too.) Olivieri’s panettone won two stars at the Great Taste Awards in 2020 and gold for the “Bakery Desserts” category at the 2024 Sofi Awards. Owner and pastry chef Nicola Olivieri was named a 40 Under 40 honoree by Fortune Italia.

An Italian treat with a rich history.

An Italian treat with a rich history.

The roots of panettone go back to the Roman empire when honey was added to leavened cakes, but it popped up formally as “panettone” in Milan. As the story goes, the Duke of Milan was having a feast in the 15th century and the cook accidentally burned the dessert. In a panic, the cook took the kitchen boy’s suggestion to serve the Duke the sweet leavened cake he had made for himself. The Duke loved it and the cook called it “L’è ‘l pan de Toni” after Toni, the kitchen boy. Now we know it as Panettone!
