These elegant molded glass Bee Glasses come to us from 550-year-old French glassmaker La Rochère, the oldest continuously running glass factory in Europe. Some of the company’s most popular designs, including their Bee Collection, are inspired by regional histories. In this case, the design is a reference to the Napoleonic bee, known as an imperial emblem of power and prestige during the Second French Empire. (Napoleon also included the bee in his coat of arms, cloaks, carpets, flags, upholstery, leather—everywhere. What’s not known is why he chose the bee.) Designed to serve water, juice or wine, these stemmed glasses are durable enough for everyday use but elegant enough to use as an accent piece while entertaining.

What’s the Buzz?

Rewind to 1475, when the small village of Passavant-la-Rochère saw “gentleman glassmaker” Simon de Thysac start what’s now the oldest continuously operating glass factory in Europe. (Yes, La Rochère survived the Thirty Years War, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Empire and more upheavals.) Over the centuries, their glassware reflected complex patterns of Versailles and Lyonnais trends, and ultimately expanded to elaborate decorations and pressed glass techniques in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, or 550 years later, La Rochère is still run by descendants of de Thysac—and every master glassmaker trains for a decade to perfect their craft.
