The interior features a “komainu,” or guardian lion-dog, surrounded by peonies, billowing clouds and ocean waves; this traditional pattern has symbolized protection since the Nara Period. (In Japan, pairs of komainu guard the entrances of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples to ward off evil spirits.) Due to the high-temperature glazing style, no two bowls are alike.
