Shimomura Kihan Stainless Steel Steam Basket

Regular price $22.95

Many steamer baskets—especially those collapsible metal ones—are a bit too deep to cook foods evenly. Enter Shimomura’s 18-8 stainless steel basket, which has a wide, relatively shallow mesh basket and stable feet for quick, efficient steaming. We like that the Japanese brand opted for a wider shape that accommodates plenty of vegetables, dumplings, buns and fish fillets in a single layer. And it’s not just for steaming: You can use it to defrost low-moisture foods like frozen shrimp and berries or rinse/clean dried grains thanks to the flat shape and shallow walls. (It’s so much easier than rooting through a deep colander to find those pesky bits of debris.) This basket is made from dishwasher-safe, 18-8 Japanese stainless steel, so it will last for years.

Use this basket to prepare recipes that call for steaming ingredients, like our Steamed Fish with Miso and Scallions, Bagna Cauda with Steamed Broccoli and Spicy Sichuan Steamed Chicken. (To prevent sticking, we recommend brushing the basket with a little neutral oil before adding food.) We recommend this tool for rinsing and cleaning dried beans, lentils and rice, or as a defrosting vessel for anything that won’t release too much liquid as it thaws—think firm fish fillets, shrimp, vegetables and berries.

Dishwasher-safe.
