Made in Japan and packaged in a gift box, this scalloped ceramic serving bowl is made with a 500-year-old glazing technique. “Sometsuke,” or applied dye, calls for potters to paint cobalt pigments directly on unglazed pottery, before they’re clear-glazed and fired. This specific design shows off birds perched on flowering branches in a squared center panel, framed by bands of blossoms. There is a repeating petal motif that wraps around the exterior. The scalloped rim, narrow footed base and intricate patterning make it a one-of-a-kind statement piece. Due to the high-temperature glazing style, no two bowls are alike. With its 8.75-inch diameter, the bowl is perfect for serving noodles, rice dishes and salads or displaying fruit. The bowl is safe to use in the microwave and dishwasher.
