Iwami ware, or “Iwami-yaki” in Japanese, is a pottery style that originated in Iwami, Shimane Prefecture, in the mid-18th century. Firing the pottery in temperatures of over 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit (1,300 degrees Celsius) results in beautifully colored, durable ceramics that are resistant to salt, acids, alkali and water. They’re traditionally used for water storage, pickling and even roof tiles (known as sekishū-gawara). Since 1925, Motoshige has manufactured suri plates and mortars made with Iwami ware.
