This collector’s item from La Despensa de Palacio features handcrafted chocolate truffles housed in a tin shaped like a hot-air balloon. The nutty, earthy bonbons are made from sweet, silky milk chocolate filled with creamy hazelnut paste. The design pays tribute to the city of Seville’s very first balloon flight, which occurred more than 200 years during the reign of King Ferdinand VII. Alfredo, the company’s in-house painter, designed the tin to resemble an actual 19th-century hot-air balloon, complete with passengers, Spanish flags and decorative bunting. The domed lid pops off to reveal over a dozen spherical truffles wrapped in shiny red, green and gold foils. Enjoy them with a pot of tea or an espresso for a special treat; when finished, reuse the tin to store other items.

La Despensa de Palacio founder Antonio Rivero’s ancestors were the bakers of the Marquess of Estepa in 1743. Not long after, they began managing “la despensa de palacio,” or the palace pantry. When the Marquess’ court moved from Seville to Madrid, Rivero’s relatives kept the nobleman’s oven, which was used for years to bake mantecados, or Spanish crumble cakes, for nearby villagers.
