This spouted bowl was crafted by artisan potters in Gifu, Japan, the mountainous prefecture home to Mino ware, a 1,300-year-old ceramic style known for its organic shapes, natural glazes and wabi-sabi philosophy. This eye-catching piece acts as the perfect serving bowl or centerpiece. And each bowl—which features a freeform pour spout, footed base and swirling vine pattern—is one of a kind due to its handmade nature.

We like to use it for saucier sides and warm salads, like panzanella or fattoush; after serving, you can pour the remaining dressing over your dish. When transferring from kitchen to table, you’ll feel the bowl’s subtle grooves that connect it back to small potters honing their craft in lush mountain villages.

What is Mino Ware?

What is Mino Ware?

It’s a natural pottery style that traces back to 7th-century Gifu Prefecture—now considered the top ceramic-producing region in Japan. Mino ware reflects wabi-sabi techniques (embracing imperfections and transience) in its handmade designs. Traditionally used during tea ceremonies, there are more than 15 different meal setting styles today—from rice and miso soup bowls to donburi and side dish plates. The pottery was designated a “traditional craft” by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1978.
