Miya Nekotori Cat Plates – Set of 4

Regular price $65.95

Made in Japan, this small plate set comes in a cute gift box and features one-of-a-kind, curled-up cats. The hand-drawn designs include feline friends that are striped, spotted, blue and more; the raised ears give the rounded plates a sculptural feel in your hand. Use them to serve soy sauce, condiments or dipping oils, or pickled vegetables, smaller bites and tiny treats. All are beautiful and give a modern answer to traditional Japanese blue and white pottery, called arita ware. No two cats are alike, each one will have its own marking due to plates’ handmade nature.

What’s the story behind the blue-and-white Japanese pottery?

What’s the story behind the blue-and-white Japanese pottery?

While blue and white was a popular color scheme everywhere from China to Holland, Japan wasn’t able to produce it until the early 17th century when suitable clay for porcelain—which offers the stark white background—was found in Arita by immigrant Korean potters. The style of these first pieces is known as early Imari and they typically feature free-flowing strokes of cobalt blue on a bright white surface.
