Inspired by oroshi, or traditional Japanese “sharkskin” wasabi graters, Tomita built an easy-clean bladeless grater bowl that keeps your fingers safe. Crafted in Japan’s Tsubame-Sanjo region, the bowl’s interior features raised, textured bumps instead of sharp stamped teeth. The ridges will grind—not rip or tear—garlic, ginger, turmeric or wasabi to a fine pulp without putting your fingertips at risk. You can then prepare marinades, dressings, dipping sauces, compound butter or salsa directly in the leakproof bowl; the sloped sides and smooth steel material let you mix or whisk without catching (or worse, breaking) the textured surface. A built-in pour spout lets you drizzle vinaigrettes or tomato conservas over salad and bread, while the bowl doubles as a container for storing the dips or guacamole you just made. The seam-free grater bowl leaves nowhere for leftover pulp to hide, making cleanup easy with a swipe of a sponge or dishwasher cycle.
